Renoir Riches Slots

What do you do for an encore when you have a game as popular as Davinci Diamonds? You come out with Renoir Riches. High 5 Games and IGT released Renoir Riches to land-based casinos in 2010. It is more than just an update on the concept of the original game. It offers more pay lines and combined free games bonuses.

Renoir Riches does not use the artist's best or most famous works but they are good representations of his style. And a slot machine, even a large one on a major aisle in a Las Vegas casino, can only display so much artwork and still be a slot machine. This game is a nice tribute to one of the first modernist artists of the 19th century.

About the Theme

Pierre Renoir was an Impressionist who helped to launch and popularize the movement with other artists like Claude Monet and Édouard Manet in Paris, France. He became well-known for his portraits, famously completely musician Richard Wagner's portrait in 35 minutes. Pierre, Jean, and Claude all became accomplished creative artists in their own rights. Pierre was an actor, Jean was a filmmaker, and Claude was a ceramics artist. Pierre's son Claude was also a filmmaker.

Impressionism began when Renoir, Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille studied together as students of Swiss artist Charles Gleyre in Paris. French art at the time was consumed with grandiose scenes from mythology and history, but Gleyre's students wanted to paint landscapes and scenes from everyday life. The annual juried art show Salon de Paris rejected many of the young Impressionists' paintings, but when the Emperor Napoleon III saw some of the rejected works he insisted that a new show be established for the public to judge the art directly.

Unable to participate in regular annual art shows the Impressionists began to exhibit their works independently and they formed a rival society to sponsor a new annual art show. French critic and humorist Louis Leroy panned the artists' efforts in a newspaper review, naming them Impressionists, a label they and the public quickly adopted.

Gameplay Features and Mechanics

Renoir Riches is a 5-reel, 3-row tumbling reel slot game using 99 pay lines and an unusual 9 symbols. Tumbling reels remove all tiles that contribute to prizes and shift the remaining tiles down, then fill in the gaps by dropping new tiles into place. The tumbling continues until no more prizes can be won. Prizes are paid from left to right.

  • The game's Wild symbol, substituting for all other symbols except the Free Games Scatter symbol, just says "Wild". The Wild only appears on reels 2, 3, and 4.
  • The tiles all light up and vanish with an explosion when they contribute to prizes.
  • The high value symbols include the portraits "Charles and Georges Durand Ruel", "Young Girl in a Straw Hat", and "Victorian Lady in Blue Bonnet Hat Knitting by Guernsey Seashore".
  • The game logo is the highest value symbol and it pays 5000 times your bet per line for 5-of-a-kind. Even 4-of-a-kind pays better (500X bet-per-line) than the highest prize for most of the other symbols.
  • Charles Durand's portrait is the next highest-value symbol, maxing out at 1000 times your bet per line.
  • The Young Girl in a Straw Hat maxes out at 400 times your bet per line.
  • The Victorian Lady maxes out at 300 times your bet per line.
  • The low-value symbols are "A", "K", and "Q".

The game controls line the bottom of the screen and running from left to right manage your betting factors, report your last spin's total win if there was any as well as your available balance, and allow you to manage game performance.

There are five options to choose from on the Lines control. Using the up and down arrows you can select from 1 active pay line, 5 active pay lines, 10 active pay lines, 25 active pay lines, 50 active pay lines, and 99 active pay lines. Unfortunately there is no more granular control over number of active pay lines.

You can also adjust your total bet up or down by scrolling through the Bet Per Line options, which are 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, 1.00, 2.00, 5.00, and 10.00. Playing the max bet against 99 lines sets your total bet to $990 so be very, very careful about checking everything before you click on Spin. When you are playing in a land-based casino, always reset the betting options when you first sit down at a slot machine.

The Replay button is one of High 5 Games' standard controls. This allows you to watch the last spin complete again. If you just played a bonus game you can replay it (you don't bet any more money or win any more prizes).

Use the Question mark to bring up the help system. It explains the rules and provides examples of the symbols used in the game.

The Sound control toggles the sound on or off.

Clicking on Auto Play brings up a list of spin options ranging from 5 to 25. Selecting one starts the game spinning away on your behalf. You can stop the auto spins at any time.

Please Note

The Spin button also doubles as a Stop button but it only halts the animation videos. Clicking on Stop does not alter the outcome of any game.

Triggering the Bonus Round

When three Free Spin tiles tumble into position on a pay line you win the Free Spins bonus game. You get 1, 2, 3, or 4 free games. Don't panic. More than 1 line can trigger the Free Spins bonus, and all the randomly triggered games are added together so you should get a reasonable number of free spins. However, you cannot trigger another Free Spins bonus during the bonus game.

Most of the symbols are the same but in the bonus round you have two Wild symbols. The original Wild symbol is still there but it now only appears on reels 1, 2, and 3.

A new Wild symbol appears on reels 2, 3, and 4.

Everything else works the same as in the regular game. The bonus game continues until all of your spins (including extra tumbles) are exhausted.

There isn't much else to say about the game. This is the kind of game some people love and some people hate. Renoir Riches has been criticized by some reviewers for bringing too few new play features to the gaming experience, when compared with Davinci Diamonds.

However, we can agree that the music is elegant especially during the bonus game. Also, the exploding tiles burst into colors that were favored by the Impressionist movement. That's a nice touch that shows the designers at High 5 Games paid attention to art history.

Even the "A", "K", and "Q" symbols honor the Impressionist tradition. Although the game itself doesn't invest in a lot of tricks and tickles it strives to be a minor work of art, or a minor gallery of art. The framing on the tiles uses an intricate design. And the background images remind one of Victorian era wallpaper, which looks much better in Renoir Riches than it does on the walls of your house.

You won't take home any award-winning paintings but you just may take home a better appreciation for the works of Renoir, and maybe some winnings as well.
