After a successful amateur career, Tyson turned pro in 1986. In his first pro fight, Tyson knocked out Hector Mercedes in the first round. Tyson went on to fight 15 times in his first year as a professional.

A 15-0 winning streak at heavyweight helped build the hype around Tyson. After just a year in the pros, Tyson made his television debut in 1986.

Rise to World Heavyweight Championship

After amassing a 27-0 record, Tyson earned his first title shot in late 1986 against then-WBC Heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick. Tyson beat Berbick by second-round TKO, becoming the youngest Heavyweight champion in history.

His winning streak continued, and Tyson added the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles to his resume. In 1988, Tyson won his 35th straight fight to claim The Ring heavyweight title. Tyson would not hold onto the belt for long, though, losing to Buster Douglas in February 1990.

The loss to Douglas was one of the most shocking upsets in boxing history. Mike Tyson’s odds heading into the fight were roughly -4200, with Douglas listed at +3700. Tyson fought four more times in pursuit of a rematch, but his quest to regain his title was derailed in 1991.

Post-Prison Years

Tyson was arrested in 1991 and went to prison in April 1992. He was originally sentenced to six years, but Tyson was released on parole in March 1995.

His early release allowed Tyson to return to the ring much sooner than expected. Tyson’s first fight after his release was in August 1995. In his third and fourth fights after his return, Tyson reclaimed the WBC and WBA heavyweight titles, respectively.

After losing three of his last four fights, Tyson retired from boxing in 2005. He had an exhibition bout against Corey Sanders in 2006, but the bout was unscored.

Tyson Comes Out of Retirement

After over a decade of inactivity, Tyson announced his return to action. He fought fellow boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match in November 2020. The two legends squared off for eight rounds, resulting in a split decision draw.

Tyson will return to the ring again this July to fight Jake Paul at Heavyweight. Paul will have a slight advantage over Tyson in terms of size and a significant youth advantage.

Paul has plenty of power, too, which will be Tyson’s biggest obstacle in this fight. Tyson will not be able to evade Paul as easily as he could have three decades ago.

If and when Paul hits Tyson, he should be able to drop and ultimately stop the former heavyweight champion. I would wager on Jake Paul’s odds in this fight.
