Super Bowl Odds Movement After the Draft

The Super Bowl 59 odds for teams at the top of the AFC have changed considerably. On the other hand, the top-heavy NFC has remained mostly unchanged.

Draft Winners and Losers

We are still months away from games being played, so we do not know yet which teams’ draft strategies were successful. However, that has not stopped oddsmakers from changing the Super Bowl 59 betting odds for several top teams in the league.

Here are three winners and three losers of the 2024 NFL Draft, based on their changes in Super Bowl 59 odds.

Winner: Houston Texans

The biggest winner of the draft was the Houston Texans. After acquiring WR Stefon Diggs, the Texans Super Bowl odds shortened from +2500 to +2000. Houston’s odds have shortened again, this time going all the way down to +900.

Despite not having a first-round pick, Houston was able to add a lot of depth to the defensive side of the ball. In total, the Texans made nine draft picks, five of them on defense. Football betting sites give the Texans the third-best Super Bowl odds, behind only the Chiefs (+500) and the 49ers (+650).

Houston exceeded expectations last year by winning the AFC South and winning a playoff game. Stroud should be better in year two, and the team has plenty of other young stars that should improve, too.

Brock Purdy and Joe Burrow both took their teams to the Super Bowl in recent years as second-year players. Stroud is in a good position to join them, but the team will be under more pressure this season. If the team can take another step forward, then the Texans are worth betting on to win the Super Bowl.

Loser: Cincinnati Bengals

Speaking of the Bengals, they are distinctly in the loser category following the 2024 NFL Draft. Cincinnati made 10 picks, but their draft position made it challenging to get a highly-touted prospect.

The Bengals’ odds only faded from +1100 to +1200. However, the aforementioned Texans leapfrogged them on the updated Super Bowl odds boards.

Part of the reason for the slide is that Cincinnati took some players with major question marks. Their first-round pick, OT Amarius Mims, for instance, only started eight games in college. The Bengals have been trying to address their offensive line for years, so there will be added pressure on Mims to start early.

Cincinnati lost players earlier this offseason, such as RB Joe Mixon. More well-known Bengals could also leave the team soon. Two of the team’s stars, WR Tee Higgins and DE Trey Hendrickson, both requested trades this offseason.

Winner: Green Bay Packers

Only one team in the NFC saw its Super Bowl 59 betting odds noticeably increase following the NFL Draft: the Green Bay Packers. At the end of March, Green Bay was listed at 22-1, but they are now available at 20-1.

The increase was enough to move the Packers into a tie with the Falcons for the fifth-best Super Bowl odds in the NFC. Green Bay’s odds also look better after Detroit’s slight slide from +1400 to +1500.

Cheeseheads have a lot to be happy about following the Draft. Green Bay made 11 picks and addressed several needs on both sides of the ball. The team’s two second-round picks, LB Edgerrin Cooper and DB Javon Bullard, should help improve a defense that allowed 7.3 yards per attempt last season.

Similar to Houston, much of Green Bay’s success will depend on a second-year starter at QB. The difference is that Jordan Love is going into his fourth NFL season and has a great offensive-minded head coach. If you are looking for a dark horse in the NFC, then the Packers are a good bet to win Super Bowl 59.

Loser: Los Angeles Chargers

The start of the Jim Harbaugh Era in LA is off to a less-than-ideal start. Due to the team’s salary cap issues, the Chargers had to trade WR Keenan Allen and cut WR Mike Willaims. However, rather than trading down or drafting a WR with the fifth overall pick, the team took OT Joe Alt.

Alt was widely regarded as one of, if not the best, tackle in this class. LA did draft WR Ladd McConkey in round two, but he was the ninth receiver off the board.

The lack of offensive firepower is one reason the Chargers’ title odds have faded from 25-1 to 30-1. Harbaugh is trying to change the organization’s culture, and that takes time. It could work in the long run, but it is unlikely that LA will be a title contender this year.

Winner: New York Jets

The New York Jets are a surprise winner of the 2024 NFL Draft. NFL betting sites had the Jets listed at +2500 odds to win the Super Bowl in March. Now, New York’s odds have shortened to +2200.

Any chance the Jets have of being a serious contender will depend on the health of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear just four plays into his Jets debut last season. So, it is not that surprising that New York drafted OT Olu Fashanu instead of TE Brock Browers in the first round.

New York also acquired multiple linemen during free agency to help keep Rodgers upright. They did get Rodgers new weapons, taking WR Malachi Corley in the third round. Corley and free-agent signee Mike Williams will join Garrett Wilson in the Jets WR room.

The Jets have a good shot at winning the AFC East and guaranteeing themselves a spot in the playoffs. However, it is challenging to imagine New York’s young stars living up to the hype in their first playoff run.

Loser: Buffalo Bills

Speaking of the AFC East, the Buffalo Bills took several steps backward this offseason. The team was forced to let several starters from last season walk due to salary cap issues. Buffalo also traded its best receiver, Stefon Diggs, to Houston.

The Bills had a chance to draft the fifth WR off the board in the first round. Instead, Buffalo traded back twice, first with the Chiefs and then with the Panthers. Both Kansas City and Carolina drafted WRs, and so did the 49ers.

As a result, the Bills drafted Keon Coleman with the first pick in the second round, making Coleman the eighth WR off the board. Buffalo’s salary cap casualties and draft moves have led to the team dropping from +1100 to +1500 in the updated Super Bowl odds.

Buffalo will look very different this year. They nearly missed the playoffs last season despite finishing as the second seed. With so many new faces in Bills uniforms, all of the pressure of getting the team to the payoffs will fall squarely on Josh Allen.
